FAQ
Does it take long to set up?
Not at all! An onboarding screen will ask you about plants, your location, and setting up an account to save your info. The rest is done with our databases.
Do I need to install a program?
Garden Advisor works within a browser or can be downloaded through the Apple App store. We will be releasing an Android version soon through the Google Play store.
Does Rational Gardening use AI?
Rational Gardening does not rely on AI alone to generate gardening advice.
Our RG Horticultural Platform combines information about your location and plants with historical and current weather, climate, and environmental data, soil and geological data, and our horticultural plant knowledge graph. The platform analyzes these data together to understand the conditions affecting your garden.
Artificial intelligence is one part of this process. A horticulture-focused language model helps interpret the available information and turn it into clear, useful recommendations.
Unlike many AI services, our horticultural AI is currently hosted on our own local computing infrastructure here in California, rather than relying on large third-party AI data centers. That infrastructure is powered primarily by solar energy.
The result is data-informed, location-specific, AI-assisted horticultural advice—not a general-purpose AI simply answering a gardening question from what it learned during training.
How do you determine plant start dates?
We calculate when to start planting based on your specific data (location, garden zone, weather history, etc.) and the plant’s information, such as growing days and frost tolerance. Information comes from our own plant database, not GenAI, and is calculated from within our own software. Our estimate will notify you if it’s an ok time to plant something. If it’s too late to grow something now, we’ll suggest a future sowing date so there’s time to reach full harvest.
Right now, our estimates are for outdoor-grown plants only, but we will add options for greenhouse and hothouse plants in the future.
What if I have a plant that’s not listed?
Please let us know! There will be an outlined conversation bubble where you can report feedback and we’ll add it to our feature list. We’re still building the app and are often adding new features. You can also select a similar plant (ex select carrot for parsnip) in the meantime while we get to your request.
